Jill Eicher on Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon and Chancellor of the Exchequer Winston Churchill

Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, once one of America’s most influential businessmen, is now largely forgotten, despite playing a key role in collecting war debts from post-WWI Europe. His five-year clash with Winston Churchill—then Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer—over these debts sparked international headlines but is rarely mentioned in histories of this period. (Their five documented meetings aren’t even mentioned in their official biographies.) Our second Fall 2025 lecture will feature Jill Eicher, who will discuss her book Mellon vs. Churchill: The Untold Story of Treasury Titans at War. The book brings to light the epic battle of wills between Mellon and Churchill as they debated the repayment of the enormous sums loaned by America to Great Britain during World War I.
